First Spring Peony by Rita Blockman

November 2024 - First Spring Peony

About the Image(s)

Every year I M Happy to welcome this Peony in my garden. However, I never know the best way to photograph it. Is this closeup too intense? Should I take it from a distance and have more greenery in it? Thanks you. Rita

I like the close up. The amount of greenery you show accomplished two things. It puts the image of the Peony slightly off center and provides a nice background.
I wouldn't change anything.   Posted: 11/06/2024 18:36:07

Great impact composition, color and sharpness. How about toning down the green background so it doesn't fight with the flower?   Posted: 11/09/2024 12:58:24

I don't think you were too close for this composition. My only worry would have been if the camera would get the subject in proper focus that close.

As I'm sure you know, the brightest thing(s) in a photo draws the viewer's eyes. So, I might suggest lowering brightness, highlights, and saturation across the entire image, followed by brushing the blossom back to reveal it. I hope you don't mind that I tried that, and I've attached the result. I may have over-done it, but it indicates my thinking.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I like what you did toning down the image and bringing the blossom back a little. I am much more satisfied with it!I will try to darken the edges, too,as Jerry suggested.   Posted: 11/12/2024 15:13:47

Rita, you have a beautiful Peony. My Peonys are far tall and the always fall over soI have to prop them up. I totally agree with the others. I would use Snapseed and darken the edges of the image to make it standout. Jerry   Posted: 11/11/2024 19:54:38

Thank you for the suggestion about darkening the edges, Jerry. I think that will enhance the flower.   Posted: 11/12/2024 15:18:08

I like your composition and agree with the others about toning down the highlights. A vignette is often helpful in darkening the surrounding area thus focusing the viewers eye on the main subject. The vignette should be subtle enough to not be noticeable. What a beautiful flower.   Posted: 11/17/2024 19:36:34
