About the Image(s)

Taken with: Canon EOS R6 and Sigma EF 200 500mm f5-6.3

Hand Held
Editing: Photoshop Elements/ON1 Raw ~ crop, minor enhancements

Mission: Found the Great Egret sunning on a dramatic log above the river. Many birds eliminate before flight and I waited patiently for the right moment to take the shot.

Hi Ted,
Patience pays off, rewarding you with this nice pose of the bird taking off.
White birds make it very difficult to control the exposure in a sunny day. I find that the image is a bit overexpose. Maybe you can recover some detail in the highlights by reducing the exposure.
As the bird is flying to the left, I would consider another crop, like a landscape format, to create a bit more room on the left side and less in the top of the image. This would result in a more focused attention on the bird.

Hi Maria,

I greatly appreciate your comments and advice. That's very good insight to change the format to landscape. I also found that shooting in the evening to be a better light source, as well. Thanks   Posted: 07/12/2024 12:32:37

Ted, the position of the egret creates a moment of tension. In lightroom Classic you can use a mask to select just the subject to change the exposure. I was just learning about that.   Posted: 07/18/2024 01:56:10

Hi Ted, A beautiful image. I like bird composition. The image is a little small, not able to see details. Usually, an image size is required at least 4MP (megapixels) for commercial use. Here the suggested size is 1080 pixels for the longest side. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 07/22/2024 14:11:22

Thanks, Xiao
I'm still the novice in post processing. I think I may be able to solve future problems starting next month after getting a little better with ON1 Photo Raw 2024. Thanks   Posted: 07/22/2024 15:11:29

Thank you!
Yes, Ted, you want the images send to be not too big but big enough to display the detail.

https://psadigital.org/resources/guidelines.php

The only requirement is that the file cannot excede 1Mb and be in the JPEG format. Whatever dimensions will fit within the maximum will be fine. Typically, around 1200-1400 pixels on the long side will be fine.
Use sharpening after you have resized your original image but before saving for the web.
File size should be in KB not MB. Using Save for Web at maximum or highest will give you an acceptable file size. DO NOT use any of the following characters in your file name: !@#$%^&*()+={}[]|<>?/,
If you are in more than one group, you may not enter the same image in both groups, even if one version is color and the other   Posted: 07/23/2024 00:16:11

No one warns us about how much patience is needed for bird photography, LOL.
Your patience has paid off, great Great Egret coming at you

White birds are really hard and you often need to use exposure compensation and watch the histogram to make sure that whites are not overexposed.

Comments
-- There is no SOOC to compare to so we don't know how much you cropped
-- What mode were you on? P M A S?
-- What were your settings? aperture, ss, iso? exposure compensation?

Your patience paid off. Great pose of the egret but as stated white birds are really hard to photo. I usually use exposure compensation and underexpose and in post processing bring up the exposure. I would also crop in to give more focus on the bird.   Posted: 07/28/2024 19:25:29
