Slow Motion at Juno Beach Pier by Marge Barham

January 2025 - Slow Motion at Juno Beach Pier

About the Image(s)

This is a real oldie but still a favorite. While waiting to see if the moon was going to show up that night I was keeping busy by playing with slow shutter speeds. I think I timed this one pretty well. No, never did see the moon that night. This photo was taken in March at 7:37 pm. And of course that reminds me ~ it's a good time to check my camera clock and date settings. Happy New Year to all.
Camera ~ Canon Rebel XSi Settings ~ f 22, 15 sec, ISO 100, 18 mm lens.

First, I want to apologize for my lack of participation. I completed a couple of particularly difficult club judgings the last couple of months and I was just burned out. Please rest assured I take full responsibility. Now, your image: I love the long exposure effect. I like your composition with the leading lines of the pier and the white water both pointing to the brighter patch in the sky. I did some contrast and dehazing of the sky and lightened the pier to further emphasize the leading lines. I felt the shoreline was a bit too bright for my taste so I reduced the highlights along the shore. The Lightroom crop tool revealed a very slight lean to the left of the horizon that I straightened. Without the crop tool it would not be noticeable but I was using the tool to crop a slight amount of the shore. I finished by adding some mid-tone brightness to the whole image. All this just to make it more mine. I think you did a great job finding and capturing this image.   Posted: 01/05/2025 19:14:23

Kurtis, I am so happy to hear that you were busy with club judgings. How wonderful for you to have that opportunity to judge others work. I guess that's why I missed your judging my photos so much.
Now for my photo... I love what you did but truthfully the only thing that stands out to me is the "mid-tone brightness to the whole image. I still have sooo much to learn, but doing what you did with the brightness made the water turquoise and everything just pops. Now I will try my best to do the same effects on my computer. Thank you for your input.   Posted: 01/06/2025 17:03:24

I think this is a nicely composed landscape with beautiful light and colors. I like what Kurtis did but of course pushed it a bit further. I cropped and flipped it horizontally for a different look.   Posted: 01/08/2025 03:48:48

Of course you are right, it needed to be flipped. Also I like the crop. Thanks for your vision Art.   Posted: 01/20/2025 03:02:24
