About the Image(s)

This Hummingbird was photographed in our honeysuckle vines in our front
garden. I used the Canon R5 paired with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS
II @ 400mm, 1/6400 sec., f/5.6, ISO 3200 in Aperture priority. Using
"Evaluative" metering, I should have added a little exposure compensation
based on the brighter background. I shot at the higher ISO just to see if I
could tell the difference at the extra high shutter speeds. I've shot as low
as 1/1000 sec. The big difference is when the wings are at intermediate
positions other than full aft or full forward when starting their reversal.
At 20 fps in electronic shutter, I was not getting any appreciable rolling
shutter. I did use a tripod. Processed in Lightroom Classic, Topaz Photo AI
and Topaz Studio II.

I like the diagonl, the lovely colors and the detais. For me, a tighter crop and toning down the brighness amd some more contrast woould make it even better. I have never been successfull in taking photos of hummingbirds. I pushed it a bit and flipped it horizontally.   Posted: 11/04/2024 20:07:19

Wow! Incredible shot. I love the darker color and the flip from Art. Your sharpness is amazing. With such a high shutter speed and ISO I can't imagine why you would need a tripod.
I would take Art's version and blow it up BIG and place this on a wall facing your front door. No that's a bold statement!
Beautiful Kurtis.   Posted: 11/09/2024 01:47:29

That lens/camera/adapter combination gets really heavy after a while. The hummers come in on the wing just briefly, so the camera has to be close to its shooting position most of the time.   Posted: 11/24/2024 20:34:26

I certainly agree Kurtis. These old arms are not what they used to be.   Posted: 11/24/2024 20:40:56

Excellent image Kurt. If any think not necessary would/could, looking at your EXIF, trying to slow down the 1/6400 sec. exposure speed, trying the give the bird a slightly sense of speed. Good shot.
