March 2022 - The man in the moon

About the Image(s)

This is taking inspiration from last month's Space shot. I had already done some work on a space photo using macro work in lockdown, of soap bubbles. I had put three together on a black background but not been happy as there were large area of fuzzy edges and there was still too big a space in the centre. I also had my 'corona' construct made with step and repeat technique of an ogre statue, and then Lynne showed she had used marbles. Again I had a shot of marbles in a wine glass so I extracted a part of that and moved it to the central area, Each time I copy/pasted the coronas I changed the blend mode and altered the hue. I also darkened them, changed their placement so they were covered by the main, large planets. I've had to play around a lot with Nik on the final image to make them look as if they belong. I used 'dark contrasts' and then a slight vignette and last of all, I converted to mono and then tweaked the colour sliders to alter the contrast overall. A lot of fiddling but I actually like the end result. So do you think it works?

Yes, indeed. This looks "real" in the Creative Altered Reality context. Nice work.

Hello, All: Did you see in the March 2022 issue of the PSA Journal (page 45) where PTD Editor Lynn Maniscalco mentioned that the Judging Team for the Photo Travel Division's InterClub (Group B) Competition Results included Brian Magor and Diana Magor along with Lyn Rostron   Posted: 03/07/2022 09:30:47

We aim to please! You could also point out your own judging.   Posted: 03/07/2022 11:29:19

I was one of a group of photographers in the Sun City Photo Club's Print SIG who judged the Photographic Society of America (PSA)'s Round Two of the 2021-22 international Inter-Club Prints Competition (ICPC.) A news clipping from today's local newspaper, The Williamson County Sun, is below. I'm the judge in the Red Shirt.

Congrats to all the judges.
Interesting image, so completely different from "straight" photography.   Posted: 03/07/2022 16:06:33

But they all started out as straight photos. The 'planets' are soap bubbles taken close up, the ogre was a statue outside a Comicon conference centre in America. All I've done is 'play' with them in Ps.   Posted: 03/08/2022 04:24:53

I noticed that I said I tried with marbles and I did, but it didn't work so they came out and my original construct went back in in the central position. if you look hard you can see the ogre. I've turned it round on the others so he doesn't show so much and changed the centre of the circle so they look a bit different.   Posted: 03/07/2022 17:28:18

Very different and looks almost scientific.   Posted: 03/07/2022 18:36:14

Interesting image, and it does look like a space shot, except that the small planets with the items sticking out of them do not look like planets. Other than that I think that you did a good job. Good work for all of the judges.   Posted: 03/08/2022 10:25:55

Agree -they don't look like planets -more like asteroids. Things that in science fiction would be being mined for their very important minerals etc. I like scifi so my mind does tend that way.   Posted: 03/08/2022 12:18:00

This turned out so well! I will take your lead and try again with my marbles as you have inspired me. The little guys do look like asteroids and the big "planets" are realistic. (As imagination would allow.) Very nice.   Posted: 03/17/2022 21:38:31

With yet another variant gaining ground, I'm afraid I'm not an objective critic of corona-themed images at the moment! Nonetheless, you've been very creative in formulating and combining the soap bubbles, marbles, etc., although I think I'm seeing what is supposed to be the ogre as a large bison. You didn't actually start with a bison there, did you?   Posted: 03/18/2022 00:24:48

No I assure you there is no bison there. I should have said as well that the spikes are actually the pointed feet of a model who does pole dancing. She was wearing ballet shoes and sat down and pointed her feet. I just extracted the bit I wanted. I can understand your dislike of covid but most photographers seem to be concentrating on portraits of people wearing masks. I was actually just thinking about a space photo and the virus seemed to fit in well as an approaching asteroid and then someone said it looked like covid which is where it started from so it became a threat from space. My mind obviously got mixed up! The question really is whether it works as a photo.   Posted: 03/18/2022 04:58:18
