November 2025 - Warden housing block Alcatraz

About the Image(s)

Warden Housing Block - Alcatraz

Taken with Samsung Galaxy mobile phone.
ISO 25 (? Seems odd, but that's what it claims.)
f/1.8
1/502 sec. exposure (also seems odd)

After over 20 years living in California, I decided in February that I was overdue for a trip to Alcatraz, so Robert and I went on a tour last February. Although the photos are fine, I'm uncertain that they're really the kind of thing that one enters in exhibitions or hangs on the wall. What do you think? Would you submit this sort of image to the PSA exhibitions?

Jennifer,

To answer your question, I wouldn't enter this for a PSA exhibition!

Tha doesn't in anyway say anything about the image being good or not, it just says taht exhibition judges tend to be looking for certain things. I presume you would enter this into open monochrome? In the PIDM and PIDC sections a lot of images are from elaborate setups and to compete with them is difficult.

I like the clean lines, but the foliage flowing onto the stairs rather spoils it.   Posted: 11/03/2025 15:57:49

You had a very good eye for the angles in the architecture. Looks like it was a cloudy day, so too bad that there were no shadows to further emphasize the angles.
We also made a tour there, quite some time ago, and it was a wonderful photo shoot day for me, with all the hulking buildings, obviously empty.   Posted: 11/03/2025 17:19:58
