This is a headless statue in an old cemetery in Maryland taken earlier in April. I like it with a square crop and the post processing was done with Photoshop using a black and white adjustment layer. The brightness of the statue has been bumped up to make it stand out more against the background.

Good subject, and you lightened it up well so this looks very good in monochrome.
Suggest darkening the bright slab on the right to the same dark shade as the dark stone on the left. Maybe a lower point of view might have worked for the statue, but that might not have yielded such a good background.   Posted: 05/06/2025 07:23:09

An interesting image, and going to mono was a good choice. I like the crop. I do agree with Stephen that you should darken the stone on the right, but understand that may be difficult has it has a lot of white in it.   Posted: 05/07/2025 18:54:58

I wondered how much you wanted to make the statue stand out from the background, so I tried opening the original in Camera Raw, then selecting the statue and lightening it. Then I hit inverse and darkened the whole of the background. The slabs still showed up so I selected them and used curves to darken them and reduce their contrast. There were still some much lighter lines along their edges showing through so I cloned them out. I also cropped a small amount off the top.
Maybe I went too far, but the statue does now stand out very clearly and one's eye doesn't wander off onto the background!   Posted: 05/07/2025 19:18:26

Wow, Diana's treatment is terrific, and so atypical. I like it best.   Posted: 05/10/2025 00:43:29

I really liked Stephen's suggestion so I darkened all the really bright spots. I really didn't care that much for Diana's suggestion. So I reprocessed the photo are I really like this. What do you think?   Posted: 05/10/2025 17:31:39
