About the Image(s)

Stanton Hall

This was taken last Spring in Natchez, MS using an Olympus E-M10 mark IV camera that had been converted to IR. It had an 14-42mm lens at 15mm,1/125th second, f8, and ISO 200. I liked the white building against a black sky. I did use Lightroom to correct the perspective and Topaz sharpener AI. I converted to monochrome in Photoshop using sliders to make the sky darker. I did reverse the image as I think that helped with the composition and made the driveway lead into the building.

I think this shows infrared photography at its best. The dark sky sets out the white building and the white foliage harmonizes with the white building. Good idea to reverse the image to make the drive flow left to right.
I wonder if you would comment on the generality of infrared, for which we have a lot of groups concentrated on it in the DDs. Mostly, they are lost on me, as it just looks to me like random shifts in tones, and most of the images do not seem well-composed.   Posted: 04/07/2025 03:13:44

Thanks for your comments. I do agree with what you are saying about the DD IR groups. Most of the images seem to be that the photographer is using IR because they have an IR camera and just want to use it to take images of whatever.

I take images that I think IR helps the image, like the one entered. I think that the best feature of IR is dark skies, and the contrast between a white building or white skies.   Posted: 04/07/2025 13:59:05

I agree completely with what you've both said about IR and people who take the the photos because they have the camera . Carol was an expert with IR and she partially converted me to appreciating them, but she was careful in what she took. This mansion suits the medium. As Steve says - a white building against a black sky makes it stand out and almost look like an iced cake! The foliage does not detract from the subject.   Posted: 04/13/2025 19:05:12

Sorry for the late response. I've been traveling and I came home sick. I may have had covid again as it was that bad. However I'm now on the mend.

I like IR photography. I have a 72nm filter myself which I use on my regular unconverted camera. To use it I have to do extremely long exposures. In IR photography I find the white vegetation to be distracting. Otherwise, I love the images.   Posted: 04/17/2025 20:12:49
