Church and Church Yard - Rättvik, Sweden

I used my cell phone camera to take this picture, as my DSLR wasn't wide enough to include the entire church building. This image is still too tight for my liking on the right side, but at least none of the church is cut off. Unfortunately, the sky has a lot of noise, so I've made it even darker than it was already. But now I'm wondering if it is overpowering the rest of the image? Have I gone too far darkening the sky here? What else should I try with this, or is the right side going to be a problem no matter what I do elsewhere? Thanks!

This is such a nice image. I really like it. I think you are right in that the church is cut off a bit to much on the viewer's right. I think the sky looks really good the way you have it. I notice there is a little bit of a fringe around areas where bright meets dark like the church right in the middle of the image.   Posted: 03/06/2025 13:51:54

Jennifer, Nice image

The right is going to remain a problem. If this is close to home you could try going back with a wider lens, or faced with a similar situation like this again, take two or three overlapping images and stitch them together later.

I like the dark, ominous sky, it adds drama.

There is a halo around the top of the steeple, which is distracting.

Just my thoughts

The right side of the church is a minor distraction. The strong elements dominate. The dark sky, the bright white church.
I am wondering if you adjusted the perspective at all? I would prefer a very slight inward lean to give the sense that you are looking up at the tower. How is this?   Posted: 03/09/2025 17:06:08

My first impression, the lean of the tower, was addressed by Stephen.
I think if the right side bothers you, you could add canvas and then clone into it since
there is nothing that I see that would be a problem doing so.... Maybe when you get to the white chapel, but it's sky to the right of it and that eliminates the problem as it becomes a bit more tricky clone. Such an interesting subject: an old graveyard and the local church. At first I though to increase the white in the clouds, but that would take away the eye-catching chuch. They are fine as is.   Posted: 03/10/2025 09:44:05

I don't object to the tightness on the right and I missed the halo effect on the steeple. However I feel as if the church is leaning to the right somewhat -an effect of tilting up to get it all in? I wanted to straighten it up but that would lose some of the surrounds and the top. Is there more on the original image?
I'm happy with the dark sky as the church stand out so well in the sunshine against it.   Posted: 03/11/2025 06:38:29

I like the dark sky against the white church. I don't think that the right side is a problem. There is a bit of distortion, but it is not really bothersome. I think that Stephen's adjustments made it worse. Overall, I like the image and it is one that I would have taken.   Posted: 03/11/2025 12:19:24
