October 2025 - Arcs of Tyneside

About the Image(s)

I was struggling to find an image for this month until I came across this one.

Something which has impressed me for some time is the repetition of arcs or arches in some of the bridges of Tyneside.

The most iconic is probably the arch of the New Tyne Bridge (to give it it’s correct name).

Here also is the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which is also a sort of arch.

The Sage Building also repeats the arch motif but, for me, the original arches here are those in the structure of Robert Stephenson’s High Level Bridge from 1850.

In this image I have tried to show these elements together.

Image made December 30th 2024 from the Newcastle quayside.
It may look like a night shot but it was made at 14.26.

Hello John,

Nice capture! I like the interplay between the bridges and buildings. The curves create leading lines that draws your eye across the frame and the building mimicking the arching bridge is well thought out.

If I could make a few suggestions, I'd lighten the bridge to separate if from the sky and bring it forward in the composition. More contrast in the sky would help and maybe remove or crop out the object in the bottom right hand corner.   Posted: 10/06/2025 13:40:02
