Namibia Diamond Mines by Susan Quinn

July 2025 - Namibia Diamond Mines

About the Image(s)

This image was shot with a DXO 24 megapixel camera that attached to my iPhone to view on screen. It was taken in deserted diamond mine in Namibia. The site is about 80 K from the ocean yet the sand has overtaken all of the buildings. It is quite nice in color but thought I would try in B & W.
It was edited in LR and then into Nik Silver Effects - fine art filter was used.

Hello Susan,

I'm jealous, Namibia was always on my bucket list of places to visit but I doubt that I'll make it now.

I think B&W was a great choice for this. The diagonals through the frame and the light coming from the windows on the left just draw you into the center.

Very nice!   Posted: 07/11/2025 16:15:14

Hi Susan: I'm glad you recovered from your surgery and are back to taking great photography again. This is a perfect example of nature taking back its space. Your image tells a story of hundreds of years of history. Nicely composed with great tonal quality, shapes and textures. Your post camera processing is spot on as well.   Posted: 07/11/2025 16:44:50

Ella and Michael,
Thank you for your comments. What I was surprised that day was the quality of the images. The actual camera was not even the size of a deck of cards (a little shorter actually} and it connected to my IPhone for viewing the images. I still have the camera but only use it is in small space.
Namibia was an exceptional trip. Every location we went to were ideal. We traveled 3000 miles in 2 week and half of the roads were unpaved. Susan   Posted: 07/13/2025 22:39:42

Susan - Like Michael this location was on my bucket list as I had seen so many amazing images from this location, but I never made it :(
A strong composition with the diagonal leading line and great detail, lighting and texture in the sand. Good tonal range and the highlights handled well. A little more contrast perhaps to boost the image?
As I have pusted before a 1-2 pixel white stroke would make the image stand out against the black screen background.   Posted: 07/16/2025 10:08:16

Hi Susan
For me this so works in mono,it really shows the varying textures throughout the image and the tonal range of the lighting in the building is really given emphasis, beautifully cropped this could almost be a surrealist painting.
I would have this printed and on my wall.   Posted: 07/17/2025 18:30:26

Susan, this is an excellent image.
I like the way the fallen door contrasts with the regularity of the other doorways.   Posted: 07/18/2025 08:08:23
