July 2025 - Flat out

About the Image(s)

I attended the 2nd round of the U.K.power boat Championship at Carr Mill Dam in early June their were 6 classes of boat competing during the day each class had two races each this is one of the Formula 2 boats which were unbelievably quick the day started very overcast with sporadic rain showers so as this boat was silver and the conditions were as I say very overcast I thought mono would suit this image.

How I did it

Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM f8,1/2500s, ISO 640 Raw file adjusted in photoshop and converted to mono cropped all round and sharpened using a high pass filter

Hi Ian: Wow and Double WoW on your image. To my eye, it is a fantastic capture all the way around. The boat is tack sharp with the water spray behind adding a sense of motion, excitement, and drama to your image. My only teeny-weeny suggestions would be to possibly consider adding a slight vignette & a stroke. A really nice image Ian.   Posted: 07/08/2025 16:09:50

Hi Ella
So many thanks its been a hectic time over the last 6 weeks I have retired after a 51 year working career and moved to an idyllic village in the Cheshire countryside I only unpacked my computer recently, this is the image I intended to post but I posted the small copy by mistake the one I intended to post was larger and did have a stroke on it and I will certainly try it with a light vignette so many thanks.   Posted: 07/08/2025 20:14:13

Hi Ian,

Great shot, I like the use of the high shutter speed to capture the droplets. Almost feel like I need to duck and get out of the way! This would make a great poster for the event.

By the way, congratulations on your retirement. More time for photography!   Posted: 07/11/2025 16:08:50

Ian,
Great image and capture. Where were you standing to get such a great angle? I love the sharpness of the water spray.
Congrats on retirement. Susan

Hi Susan
Thanks for your kind words I sussed out the best positions when I went to the event last year so got there early and stood on the side of the lake about 250 yards past the turning marker at the far end of the lake I chose this one because its on the turn after the longest straight the marker was about 150yds from the lake side.   Posted: 07/15/2025 19:35:13

Ian - a classic image of a power boat at speed with all the ingredients, particulsrly the wonderful spray pattern and a dark background. Perfectly positioned in the frame and the white water in the wake adds to the depth of the image. well processed as usual - a great capture!
Many years ago there was a power boat event on the Chasewater canal reservoir close to where I live - naturally I attended, but the boats were too far away for my longest lens at the time so no useable images :( Regrettably the event was a one off.   Posted: 07/16/2025 09:41:30

Many thanks Peter fortunately you can get right to the lakeside here close enough to use a 100 - 400mm but not so close you get a soaking every time the boats pass.
The focal length on this image was 350mm Peter just checked my file data.   Posted: 07/17/2025 18:36:48
