Michael’s Tree by Susan Quinn

February 2025 - Michael’s Tree

About the Image(s)

I have just returned home from Northern Japan, Hokkaido. This is an area made famous by Michael Kenna. I have never spent so much time out in the falling snow. I did learn how to expose to the right on Manual setting. The image was shot with my Sony AR 7 5. I did minimal adjustments in LR. Did not need to use Nik Silver Effects as it was already monochrome. It was snowing heavily which gives the overall image a pencil sketch look.
Today in Ashland it has been snowing all day and once the roads clear, I am hoping to go out and capture some more, Michael Kenna like image. Susan

Susan, Michael Kenna is an influential photographer. Your image also reminds me of the work of Shinzo Maeda. This is a beautiful study of the tree. I am almost wishing for a substantial fall of snow at home, something which is very rare nowadays.   Posted: 02/12/2025 10:20:30

Susan - a delightfull image, so delicate yet full of shape, form and texture. I am not familiar with the work of Michael Kenna, but I am sure that he would be impressed! Very well done.   Posted: 02/13/2025 10:47:30

Hello Susan,

A minimalist but powerful composition, the tree is well-positioned, and the high-key exposure emphasizes the delicate branches. I haven't dabbled in high-key photography but your beautiful photo is certainly making me want to try.   Posted: 02/16/2025 14:15:35
