About the Image(s)
I was out on the Oregon coast last November to shoot the coastal landscapes and had a chance to experience a “bomb cyclone.” Twenty-foot waves, 70 MPH wind gust, forty degrees who could ask for better photography weather! I like to process my storm photos dark and gritty, to me it conveys the mood. Let me know what you think.
Shot with a Canon EOS R5 and RF 70-200 F2.8 L IS USM at 128 mm, 1/500 sec, f11 and tripod mounted. Processed with ACR, Photoshop and converted to B&W with NIK 7 Silver Efex. Dodging and burning where I thought needed

Michael - a very dramatic image from the Oregon coast captured at precisely the right moment. The birds are an absolute bonus and the processing spot on.
As a follower of Michael Frye's blog I am very familiar with such images from the Oregon coast and had the pleasure of meeting him and Claudia at Tunnel View, Yosemite many years ago. Your image is right up there with his efforts - well done!   Posted: 01/11/2025 10:02:01

Thanks Peter! Being mentioned along with Michael Frye is an honor! I had the pleasure of meeting him and listening to two of his presentations at the NightScaper Conference in Kanab, Utah last summer, nice guy.   Posted: 01/11/2025 12:09:02

Hi Michael: Your image took my breath away! Wow, you captured this image at the exact moment the wave hit. I bet you did not see many people about on a day like this - usually it is only us crazy photographers. The result, however, is well worth the effort. The sky looks ominous with the impending bomb cyclone -yikes! I also love the birds. Another wonderful landscape image.   Posted: 01/11/2025 11:52:23

Thanks for the comments Ella! It was an exciting week for me, I love the storms. This was taken at Shore Acres State Park north of Bandon OR and unfortunately it suffered some road damage from the last set of storms going through earlier this month and will be closed for 6 months.   Posted: 01/11/2025 12:21:52

Michael, very well caught indeed. I have been trying this sort of image recently and your shot will encourage me to keep doing so.   Posted: 01/13/2025 19:03:21

Hi Michael
If anyone wants a pictorial definition of dramatic I suggest they study this image.
Superbly processed and composed, the detail is top class detail throughout all the darker areas,I love the spray from the crashing wave leaving a mist across the rock face.
Its outstanding.

Michael the timing of your capture is amazing. The crashing wave surrounded by the gulls. Very dramatic, and very pleasing.
For me the composition is right on as is the processing. Well done.   Posted: 01/18/2025 16:02:18

Thanks Ed! I can't take too much credit for the timing though, you just hit the shutter button on continuous high-speed shooting and hope you got something! :) I came home with over 8000 photos from that week. Many with the waves in various locations as they break against the rocks.   Posted: 01/18/2025 17:39:58
