January 2025 - France Castle

About the Image(s)

With the New Year upon us, I thought I would be a good idea to take a look back. This image was taken in June of 2024 while staying at a castle in France. While walking around the grounds one evening, I came across this overlook. You might be able to tell the lantern light is already on. I used a CSC with a 18-400 lens at 25mm, 1/60, F6.3, ISO 200. The image was flipped, selectively dodged and burned, cropped, sharpened, added a 3px grey stroke and called it done.

Ella - A well composed image which has clearly benefitted from flipping - I would suggest cropping a little off the bottom to just below the seat. Captured under relatively low light conditions which have reduced the overall contrast. A little more detail in the sky would be beneficial.
The area to the left of the little building, adjacent to the tree trunk, is the brightest part of the image and tends to draw the eye. The lantern is definitely on!   Posted: 01/11/2025 10:56:23

Ella, a different sort of approach to the subject. It works very well.   Posted: 01/13/2025 19:06:15

Hi Ella
I so remember the previous picture you posted from this trip and hoped you would post more, so pleased you have.
I like the way you have framed the view with the 2 trees and the bench fills the area lower right and is so important to the image, lovely detail in the climbing plant on the wall and the leafs on the tree.
My only suggestion the hedge lower left is a little dark I wondered if you opened up the shadows on it whether it might reveal a little more detail,I realise the lighting would not be great at that time of the day.

Hello Ella. A dramatic and mysterious image for me. The curb line of the road and the fence take my eye around the corner wondering what I might discover. As Ian suggested, if possible I would like a little more detain in the foreground dark bush. The large mass of near black seems to weigh heavy on the balance. The hanging lamp is definitely on. Well seen.   Posted: 01/18/2025 16:13:35
