Horn with Pinecones by Ella Schreiber, QPSA, APSA

December 2024 - Horn with Pinecones

About the Image(s)

December seems to be the month of winter and holidays and a time for wishing everyone happiness and good health. This still life image says Happy Holidays in word and image. Taken with a FF camera with a 24-105 lens at 85mm, F 7.1, ISO 250 and two speed lites used (do not recall the power level). The image was selectively burned and dodged in some areas, sharpened, added a slight vignette, and a 3 px grey stroke added and called it done. Happy Holidays to all!

Happy Holidays Ella! Your still-life's are always fantastic, this is a genre of photography I've never attempted and not sure I could. I think the composition is well balanced and the horn's circular shape draws your eyes and creates flow. I like the smooth gradient background which adds depth and makes the subject stands out.

Just my two cents worth but I think the pinecones could use a touch more light to bring out their texture and presence in the composition.   Posted: 12/09/2024 19:19:32

Ella - beautifully arranges in a very traditional manner and expertly lit as usual! I agree with Michael in that a lighter tone on the pine cones and the base components would be beneficial. As presented this area barely stands out rom the black of the table.
As usual a highly competant image and I guess that the colour version showing the red (?) ribbons and gold tape would be amazing.

Hi Ella
Just returning a favor. Your color image is lovely and does capture the seasonal feeling. However the monochrome, at least for me, is the more striking image. Monochrome is all about tones and structure. You certainly have the structure down perfectly but like others have said, there needs to be a tonal separation between the drape and the pinecones.

Happy Holidays. Hope you can add to the season with a photo of Camelback Mountain near Phoenix. Camels are seasonal right?   Posted: 12/15/2024 02:41:02

Larry thanks for your feedback. In some areas in Arizona people love camels so much they have them as pets. Seasonal? You bet here in Arizona! :-)   Posted: 12/15/2024 03:06:50

Hi Ella
I so love the way you have used the light and shade to really emphasise the curves and lines of the horn it is exceptional the cloth folded and draped in a sympathetic shape to the horn absolutely so well thought out and executed.
Happy holidays.   Posted: 12/19/2024 15:48:12

Ella,
Stunning as usual. I love how you are able to capture the highlights of the horn. I agree the pine cones could be a bit lighter. perhaps the Happy Holidays could be a bit brighter as well. Thanks for sharing the color version but I really love the monochrome version. Susan   Posted: 12/20/2024 16:48:06
