December 2024 - Towering Tranquility

About the Image(s)

Another version and composition of the monolith “Long Dong Spire” that I posted last month. Utah is one of my favorite states and I can’t wait to go back out there next year.
Shot with a Canon EOS R5 and RF 15-35 F2.8 L IS USM at 30 mm, 1/100 sec, f11 and tripod mounted. Processed with ACR, Photoshop and converted to B&W with NIK 7 Silver Efex. Dodging and burning where I thought needed

Hi Michael: Another fabulous moon scape image. To my eye, Long Don Silver takes center stage, with the shadows in a supporting role. Great leading line with the foreground play on light. The sky is interesting and technically well done as well. This is a very remote area in Utah, and you must have hiked quite a distance for these shots. They are definitely worth it. Keep them coming I think they are great!   Posted: 12/09/2024 17:03:14

Thanks Ella! Fortunately, it's less than a mile to hike to this area, but it is out in the middle of nowhere. Utah and NW New Mexico are two of my favorite places out in the west and I go out every year for several weeks at a time.   Posted: 12/09/2024 17:50:05

Michael - another stunning image to follow up on last month's stunner. Very well composed with the monolith centre stage with so many leading lines to it. The texture in the sand at the base of the monolith, emphasized by the side lighting and the shapes are sublime. A well balanced image and the strong sky is a real bonus.
If I was able to travel once more to the USA this location would be on my bucket list.
Happy Holidays.   Posted: 12/10/2024 10:36:57

As the others have all commented, it is a great image. I might suggest removing the very bright cloud at the top of the image( or tone down the brigtness). At first I thought that I would like to see the mountains a little less bright, however, doing that would reduce the contrast between the spire and the background. Great detail in the mountain range. Thanks Susan! I think that's a great suggestion and I'll try toning it down a bit.   Posted: 12/20/2024 16:49:30
