November 2024 - Luma dance troupe

About the Image(s)

I mentioned recently I was humbled to have been invited to become a member of Luma Creations media team as the photographer I am part of a 4 person media team covering Latin American events organised by Luma creations even more humbling I am the only member of the team who is non Latin American.
I officially covered my first event for Luma on Saturday 12th October the day of Latin American day of Indigenous people with a fabulous event called Latin X at the Unity Theatre Liverpool.
Pictured are the Luma dance troupe formed only 6 months ago by Choreographer and lead dancer Valeria Cazas, its so hard to believe they are only 6 months from creation they gave 2 amazing dance routines.

How I did it

Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM focal length 47mm, f4 1/250s ISO 5000 .
Basic adjustments to RAW file made in CS6, cropped slightly all round sharpened using a high pass filter and converted to mono using a gradient filter on an adjustment layer.

Hi Ian: Congratulations on your becoming part of the media team! The dancing ladies seem to be having a great time and suspect this image is nice in color as well. To my eye, your image appears to be a bit underexposed and might benefit from a levels adjustment as the upper bodies and faces seem dark. Given that they were dancing your image is well focused overall.   Posted: 11/08/2024 13:50:11

Ian - congratulations on your appointment as photographer to the dance team!
Your image certainly captures the essence of the dance group and you have caught a great arrangement of the dancers.
Overall the image is a little flat and would be improved by further adjustments in terms of contrast, brightness and in pulling out some detail in the shadow areas of the costumes which are blocked up. Difficult capture conditions I know, but I think the image has more to give.   Posted: 11/10/2024 11:15:52

Congrats on becoming a media member!

I like how you've captured the unity and grace of the dancers. The contrast against the dark background really highlights their flowing skirts and expressive faces, creating a sense of movement and emotion. I think Peter is right about lifting the shadows and creating a little more contrast in their clothing.   Posted: 11/10/2024 13:21:04

Ian, well caught action.
I agree with the comments re contrast.
There are a few items in the foreground which could be removed.   Posted: 11/16/2024 07:17:24

Ian,
Congrats on your new position. The group is lucky to have you as their photographer. The image is very interesting and in keeping with the fall season. I black and white version is well done but this is one situation where I think the color makes a more striking image. Susan   Posted: 11/18/2024 21:04:37

Ian, congrats on your new position. I must admit I like the color version better. Perhaps because the skirt in the front on the B&W version is almost black. Some detail might help, but giving the avilable light that might have not been achievable.
Good timing in the cspture.   Posted: 11/19/2024 00:12:01
