November 2024 - Two SW Jugs with Beads

About the Image(s)

November brings me back to still life. The figures on these pots represent ancient symbols pecked into canyon walls by Anasazi, an ancient civilization of the desert Southwest. I have always been intrigued and fascinated by these and have always speculated what the ancient people, who disappeared long ago were trying to say.
Shot with a FF camera with a 24-105 lens @ 58mm, F11, 1/80, ISO 200 and 3 speed lites (do not recall the power level ??“ each had a slight yellow jell attached as well). In post camera processing, I converted the image to B/W using an adjustment layer, selectively burned and dodged, sharpened, cropped and added a 2px grey stroke and called it done.

Ella,

I love this still life photograph; I think it's a beautifully arranged composition. Being B&W emphasizes the textures and shapes, allowing you to focus on the intricate details of the pottery, the contrast between the smooth ceramic surfaces and the soft, wispy texture of the dried grasses. It feels balanced, with the taller vase on the left anchoring the composition and the pitcher on the right adding a dynamic curve with its handle.

A slight critique would be to consider adding a touch more contrast to highlight the details on the vases and beads, which could enhance the visual impact. Overall, I believe this is a thoughtfully arranged and well-executed image.

Ella - yet again you treat us to a delightful still life image! The arrangement of the two jugs is spot on (as usual) and the lighting has been handled exceptionally well. I particularly like the mirroring of the grasses in the jug with the very similar material at the end of the beads.
I agree with Michael re. working a little on the details on the vases.   Posted: 11/10/2024 11:57:39

Hi Ella
I love the designs on the vases and what they represent that in itself tells a story, the vase on the left is a fairly common form but the vase on the right with its curves and arcs contrasts beautifully with the vase on the left and also the positioning and curves of the threaded beads compliments the shape of the vase, this has been so meticulously thought out and arranged and given you a stunning still life. Kudos.   Posted: 11/15/2024 21:33:37

Elle,
I am glad it is November and you are back doing still life image. I always enjoy seeing your images. In this image, I like the way you have used the fringe on the ends of the beads to reflect the shape of the straw in the vase. well done. Susan   Posted: 11/18/2024 21:24:03

Ella, as I have gotten older my ability to go on photo expeditions has declined. I am exploring still life creations to substitute for my waning ability to travel for landscapes.
You appear to me to have mastered this genre with skill. Composition, simplicity, exposure. Well done.   Posted: 11/19/2024 00:30:03
