About the Image(s)

The woman in this photo Lena, is a friend and co-worker of mine, she is also a photographer and promotional model and we got together for a shoot last month. I shot this image across the street from the Daytona State College campus at a historic old building known as the Tarrogana Tower at about 10 in the morning using available light in open shade. I took the image with a Nikon z6ii and 50mm Nikkor lens at f1.8, iso 100, 1/1000. Post processing and adjustments were done in Photoshop Elements and Portrait Pro.

I realize that she is leaning against the wall with her right foot supported there, but for me the overall effect does not work. It seems to place more light on her right thigh and creates an odd look. Because we can't easily see her lower leg and foot the question is "where did the rest of her leg go?" I think the color and texture of the stones around that leg add to this visual dilemma. Otherwise the lighting on the model is excellent and the warm tones of the yellow stones are very pleasing.   Posted: 04/02/2026 17:49:51

Yeah I can see that and perhaps it would work better if I had cropped it at her hips.   Posted: 04/02/2026 18:22:49

It might just be that I am looking on my phone not a computer, but your subject especially her face looks blurry to me while the background stone looks like it has more detail.   Posted: 04/03/2026 01:36:17

Nice portrait of your friend It looks like you tried to clone out her lower right leg with the wall It looks artificial to me I would prefer to see what her lower right leg and boot looked in the original or smoothe out the cloned edge   Posted: 04/04/2026 19:46:53

Nothing has been cloned.   Posted: 04/04/2026 20:02:10

Judy, I believe she just has her leg bent back with her foot resting on the wall. You get a glimpse of her boot. The dark textured stone below her knee is probably what you are thinking was the result of cloning?   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:54:23

I like the image. Good light and choice of setting. I agree with cropping at the bottom of the skirt   Posted: 04/08/2026 21:52:51

At F1.8, the depth of field is very shallow. If the focal point is not on the face of the subject, there is a high chance that the camera is taking elsewhere as the reference point for the depth of view, thus causing the face to be not so focused as the surrounding areas.   Posted: 04/11/2026 13:08:32

I was using face detection auto focus and checked the image to make sure the focal point was on her eyes. Like you said I think this has to do with the shallow depth of field.   Posted: 04/11/2026 13:59:02
