These are images of a lava fountain eruption at Kilauea volcano. Kilauea has been erupting from this vent intermittently since December 2024. Episode 16 began yesterday morning. These images were shot yesterday at dusk, 4/1/2025. We were shooting from the back of the Volcano House at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Instead of showing just the lava fountain, I wanted to show some of the surrounding area and gorgeous clouds lit up by the lava.
Camera info: Nikon Z8, Nikkor 70mm f/2.8 (F mount with adapter)
Exposure info:
DSC1223_DxO original.jpg: 70mm, f/8, 1/400, ISO 3200
DSC1224_DxO original.jpg: 70mm, f/8, 1/25, ISO 3200
The first step was to process both files using DxO PureRAW4 software. Then I combined the two images in ACR using HDR. I did some minor adjustments of the highlights and added a little texture trying to enhance some of the detail.

Great capture of this dramatic moment. Thank you for including the two original images for us to see. I feel like the lava flow at the bottom is a little pixelated but that could just be because I'm looking at a jpg file.

Thank you for your comment, Dorinda! There is no pixelation in the original file.   Posted: 04/03/2025 18:07:20

I thought that might be the case. Coincidentally I had a friend who was there just a couple of days ago as well.   Posted: 04/03/2025 18:11:25

Also a photographer? I'm not surprised, as it seemed like everyone on the island was up there after sunset. :-) Conditions were great, and I feel very lucky and grateful.   Posted: 04/03/2025 19:03:43

Welcome to our little group :-) Excellent first first image. Nice use of HDR. I really like the texture of the crater wall behind the fountain.   Posted: 04/04/2025 01:28:22

Nice shot.
Somehow I prefer the Original 2 image as it shows the background differences between the near and far environment.
Well done.   Posted: 04/06/2025 06:04:00
