Longstone Lighthouse by Jon Allanson

July 2025 - Longstone Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

On a recent trip up to Northumberland UK, to visit the Farne Islands to photograph the sea birds, I took this image on my XT5 with 70-300mm lens at 153mm. In 1838 Grace Darling who was the lighthouse keepers daughter, at the original lighthoouse rowed out with her father in a gale and foggy sea to rescue 9 survivors from the Sinking Ship the Forfarshore .This event led to the formation of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which is a volunteer body, providing sea rescues all around the British Isles.

Nice looking lighthouse and a cool story to go along with it. The image itself is a little static with it pretty centered in the scene.   Posted: 07/16/2025 16:23:10

Interesting story. I'd like to see this as a portrait rather than landscape. Not too sure I cropped this level. Cropped as a portrait it removes the brown structure on the right. It also places the tower in the left rule of thirds.
I'm not sure about keeping the water at the bottom.
I agree with Brad, nice looking lighthouse.

It's a beautiful lighthouse, but I think it's been cropped from a bigger image, since the resolution doesn't look good. I used the new "Super Resolution" tool in Lightroom and cropped to image to place lighthouse on the left third and the horizon on the lower third lines and also to remove the grey structure on the right.   Posted: 07/27/2025 07:29:18
