About the Image(s)
Each winter, our town hosts a spectacular Winter Festival, with one of
the most anticipated events being the live ice sculpting competition
on the frozen river. This photograph captures the moment when flying
ice shavings create an amazing contrast against the bright sky. Shot
with a Nikon D850 and Tamron 24-75mm lens at 70mm (ISO 800, f/8, 1/125
sec), I chose to convert the image to monochrome in Lightroom to
emphasize flying ice shavings against the bright sky.

Certainly an event to look forward to with lots of photo opportunities. The shavings against the sky are definitely the highlights to the photo. I think the photo could use a little more contrast through the mids, especially the ice sculpture itself to show more of its shape. Probably not possible, but it would have been nice to see more of his face. Posted: 04/16/2025 17:39:24
Brad, thanks for your feedback. It certainly is a really amazing festival with lots of photo opportunities if the weather is not too harsh. Last year it was -40 C and my camera froze along with my hands but this year weather was much nicer and I was able capture some good shots. I like your suggestions, will apply them. Great capture of intense focus. The flying ice shavings is a very cool capture against the sky. I would like to see it in color also. Posted: 04/17/2025 12:37:09
You have captured his action well. I like the flying ice shavings. It works well in mono but if it was in colour with the man wearing a red coat it would have read impact Posted: 04/17/2025 14:48:35
That is a very good suggestion, will try that next time! Posted: 04/26/2025 16:19:47
