Lubeck Cathedral Interior by Brad Ashbrook

February 2025 - Lubeck Cathedral Interior

About the Image(s)

The churches are amazing in Europe and often times, tough to photograph for various reasons. This time pointing up was challenging for the composition with the cross and clock. I don't mind a little aesthetic removal but seemed wrong to remove the clock, so it stays. This is a 5 shot HDR which helped contain the highlights from the multiple windows. Used LR to blend and used Nik Perspective to straighten. Did a little spot healing and cloning and finished with Color Efex.

Many of the classic European churches are very difficult to photograph ask is impossible to get far enough back or high enough up to avoid the converging of verticals .Your use of HDR has worked well, there is nothing burnt out and there is detail in all the shadow areas.

I love the fact that you got this photo against the back window lighting. Nice shot. You didn't mention if you used a tripod or monopod to get the 5 shots or if you did a panorama. (New word for me is a vertorama! Ha)
When you say blended, I'm assuming they were combined in Lightroom.
I like the clock as it shows how elaborate the interior of European churches are. I also like the fact that it really shows how high up a viewer looks in the massive ceiling areas. I'm not that concern about the converging verticals.   Posted: 02/21/2025 14:44:18

These were handheld, single shot no pano or vert. Merge to HDR in LR.   Posted: 02/21/2025 17:47:00
