Autumn Waterfall by Lauren Heerschap

November 2024 - Autumn Waterfall

About the Image(s)

We took a trip to the Eastern Sierra Mountains in California this fall. This was taken at 200 ISO, 47mm, F14, 1/10 sec. I have a question: What do you think about the color management in this photo? It was a sunny day, with the Aspen trees glowing, but I have had feedback it is too bright.

Hum, I'll defer to others more expert in color management.
If that is the color of the trees at the time, I'd leave it.
Love the falls.   Posted: 11/15/2024 16:50:29

I do agree that the yellows are a bit bright. Maybe a luminosity mask on the brightest areas to tone them down a little bit. I think a little darker would also help with the saturation of the leaves.   Posted: 11/18/2024 15:24:25

The yellows are very bright, I am sure that you had more texture and shades in the foliage in your original file. The reduction in file size and JPEG quality in the resizing of images for these folios considerably reduces the quality of the image particularly when there are a lot of fairly similar shades close together.   Posted: 11/19/2024 08:07:21

To me it is not so much about color management as it is aboutcomposition. What is the main subject here? Because the trees are so bright, the viewer's attention goes to the trees. Was that your intention? If you crop about a quarter of the image from the bottom you'll have a main subject surrounded by beautiful trees.   Posted: 11/21/2024 20:12:14

Hi Jan,
thank you for the suggestion. I think I will try that! That is what these groups are all about, getting some good feedback.

I concur with Jan's suggestion. Also the top trees don't appear too bright. Overall, it's a stunning capture of the fall foliage.   Posted: 11/27/2024 01:43:30
