The Worm by Kirsti Näntö-Salonen

July 2024 - The Worm

About the Image(s)

This is from a camera club photo walk in an area where a block of old industrial buildings and offices will be demolished out of the way of new construction. The plan was to document the scene before it would be all gone, but I got distracted by the Worm digging his way to the surface. - There was an old security lamp over a doorway that somebody had forgotten to turn off, and through the lens it looked like two insect eyes emitting a strange green light. It fitted perfectly in the head of the Worm. Fuji X-T4, double exposure in camera. For the green light, 203 mm, f/13, 1/350 s, ISO 160, and for the second image, 80.2 mm, f/13, 1/120 s, ISO 160. This is practically straight from the camera - I tried to enlarge the canvas a bit at the upper edge and crop iit into isquare format, but returned back to the original. What do you think?

The new "eyes" are fascinating. But I would never have guessed that the other part was an actual worm. So without the title, I would be left guessing what this was all about.   Posted: 07/09/2024 19:54:35

Thank you, Bob, I do agree. - I just saw "The Dune" in the movies, and the sand worms were strongly in my mind. I'll have to go back to the site and see if there is another camera angle, or maybe something I can do in Photoshop, to make the Worm visible also to others.   Posted: 07/10/2024 06:44:04

First of all, kudos for a perfect double exposure! How did you manage to fit the "eyes" so well in the worm? When I saw the image I thought of an insect, most probably from a sci-fi movie, with its big green eyes. The photo is a little creepy, but I assume that that's what you wanted to achieve. It is interesting the difference in color and shape between the dead leaves in the foreground and the earth in the rest of the picture.   Posted: 07/12/2024 02:36:13

Thank you, Jose! Creepy sci-fi look was exactly the aim! - It was pure luck that the lamp was exactly the right shape. I had discovered it first and taken a lot of pictures. Then I stumbled on the pipe, took the photo, went back to the lamp, and just fitted it in place.   Posted: 07/12/2024 19:34:12

I also would not have guessed what this was without your explanation. Do agree with the others that it is well done and "creepy" indeed. Sci-fi comes to mind directly. Do like it though..   Posted: 07/15/2024 08:28:44

Thank you, Agnes! I am glad that the sci-fi vibes come through. - I think that the eyes may not have reached their full potential yet. I will pick some other exposures, and start playing with them in Photoshop.   Posted: 07/15/2024 14:10:12

My first impression is the back of an beetle, i,e. the wings. But then after reading your narrative I get the feeling of a Sci-fi, as others have suggested. Very imaginative.   Posted: 07/21/2024 08:17:27
