Red Canoes by Jose Cartas

August 2026 - Red Canoes

About the Image(s)

Photo taken last June in Maligne Lake, Canada. I zoomed in the canoes to make the picture about lines and the color red. I cropped from the top and bottom to eliminate a line of sky and the top of the dock. I could make it more abstract cloning out the ropes and the text on the canoes but decided to keep them. Technical specifications: 310mm. lens, 1/45 sec. at f/8.0, ISO 400, handheld.

Hi Jose! What a strong minimalistic image, with the bold red and the diagonal lines leading through the image to the vanishing point. I like the details at the bottom. They make the image interesting - I see the color and the lines first, then look back at the sharp details in an unexpected place, and finally get delighted to realize that oh, they are CANOES.   Posted: 08/14/2026 06:00:08

Jose, you captured a wonderful pattern of canoes. The long lens helped compress the patterns. I am slightly bothered by the rope and logos on the bottom. My eyes keep going there. Maybe darken them so that they aren't so prominent, and if there is more to the picture, add it as a base.   Posted: 08/22/2026 18:35:37
