High-rise Cafés by Jose Cartas

May 2025 - High-rise Cafés

About the Image(s)

I found this building while walking in Saigon, not far from our hotel. It seems that residential apartments were converted into caf?©s and restaurants. I liked the repetition of signs, all framed by the square balconies. It's a straight shot, except for the cropping made to restrict the view only to the main subject. Technical specifications: 40mm. lens, 1/500 sec. at f/9.5, ISO 400, handheld.

Hi Jose! I love your colorful grid of the signs with all the different fonts and styles. That, plus the strict geometry and repetition make me think of Andy Warhol. I think that this is a fine documentary of the present culture and city life, and I like the way the tree tops anchor it in space. On the other hand, cropping off the lowest floor at the bottom might emphasize the abstract quality of colors and forms?   Posted: 05/06/2025 14:39:42

I tried, and it's better without the trees. Thanks!   Posted: 05/07/2025 15:23:19

Crazy pattern that you found. I also agree with eliminating bottom row.   Posted: 05/08/2025 20:55:01

Very interesting image. Lots to look at. I agree with Kirsti about the crop up. That also would take you to a more or less 1:1 ratio that might enhance the graphic mood of this image. Can you open of the shadows any to see more in some of the darker spaces ?   Posted: 05/09/2025 00:59:25

I find this image much too busy. I'm trying to read all the signs and my eye doesn't have a place to rest.
Your explanation does make it an interesting story and provides you with good memories of your visit.   Posted: 05/10/2025 10:18:52
