Laguna Colorada by Jose Cartas

February 2025 - Laguna Colorada

About the Image(s)

Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) is a shallow salt lake in Bolivia, at an elevation of 14,000 feet. It's characterized by the reddish color of its water due to algae pigmentation. It also contains borax, which produces white spots. In this image, I cropped from the bottom to get a more abstract feeling, where the flamingos are depicted as dots. Technical specifications: 250mm., 1/160 sec. at f/6.3, ISO 50, tripod.

Hi Jose, I see the image as an abstract, with the lovely hues of orange and aqua, and the intriguing curved forms. I think that the flamingos and their reflections also become, as you say, dot-like visual elements.- I wonder if cropping off the light streak and the top row of flamingos might calm it down and emphasize the forms in the water?   Posted: 02/08/2025 19:23:06

I really like the various layers that you have created in this picture. I would keep the top layer of birds as they provide one more layer.
My only suggestion is to tone down the bright water in the top half of the image.   Posted: 02/10/2025 15:41:10

I agree the top edge should possibly be cropped off, even though it means losing the top layer of birds. And Mervyn's suggestion about the bright water patch, which possibly could just use a very light blue painted over in color blending mode.   Posted: 02/10/2025 17:03:43

I like the calm water and the Flamigos. It is interesting to know that they can thrive in such high altitude. Removing the upper layer improves the harmony of the image but it is personal taste. I agree with Bob's suggestion to paint some blue color on the white patch. May be increase the texture of it as well.   Posted: 02/22/2025 09:02:58
