Drinking Nectar by Tony Au Yeong

February 2025 - Drinking Nectar

About the Image(s)

It was taken in a park in Hong Kong not long ago. Some plants bear flowers in winter and attracted this tiny green bird to feed on the nectar. Its name is Zosterops Japonicas, commonly called Japanese white eye, owning to the prominent white eye ring. They jump from branches to branches while feeding and therefore not easy to get one standing still for a moment to shoot. I was lucky to take this image in good light. The photo was taken with a canon R7 with a 100-500 zoom. I did some minor post processing in PS.

Hi Tony, what a lovely action shot! It looks like the eye of the feeding bird is gleaming of intensity. The diagonal branch makes a nice composition. Every tiny feather is tack sharp, and the background blurs beautifully. - I wonder if it might be possible to darken or blur the bright flower above his head a bit?   Posted: 02/08/2025 17:57:34

You got the bird in the perfect spot, and it looks very sharp, including some catch light on its eye. The composition is very pleasant, with the diagonal branch (and the bird) moving from the bottom right to the top left. Suggestions: 1. Darken the bright green spot below the bird's tail. 2. Eliminate the bright green spot at the top left. 3. Darken the bright segment of the branch. 4. Darken the red flower touching the bird's head or clone it using the background.   Posted: 02/09/2025 21:04:38

The head and eye are perfectly sharp and beautifully lit.
I might try a tighter crop about where the shadow starts on the body. This would eliminate the tail and bottom leaf which are not in focus and are quite dark.

Nice image. I agree with Jose's suggestions. I would not crop the tail off.   Posted: 02/10/2025 16:57:22
