About the Image(s)

I participated in a photo workshop about abandoned houses. This image was taken in an ancient hospital building that is waiting to be demolished, full of shadows and untold stories. In an alcove, me and my camera on tripod threw eerie shadows on the wall below the coat rack, and there was also something that looked like the shoulder of a third ghostly visitor. - Fuji X-T4 on tripod, 19.6 mm, f/13, 8 s, ISO 200. I cropped the image to show only the rack and the shadows, expanded the canvas a bit at the left edge with Adobe Firefly generative fill to make it symmetric, and turned it into black-and-white in Affinity Photo. What do you think?

Very nice. This blends the real and the surreal. I even see a third shadow to the right of center. I would probably clone out the two black dots lower left, possibly the black dot/lighter spot right shoulder of the center shadow. I might also consider removing the four old screw holes near the coat rack (maybe, maybe not, I'd have to play that that change). Simple, thoughtful, good tonal values.   Posted: 11/07/2024 19:44:07

Thank you, Terry, you are right about the spots. I wanted to retain the texture of the wall, but those high contrast spots are clearly distractive. - I think that the screw holes may have a role in the story, I think that I would let them stay for now.   Posted: 11/07/2024 20:11:32

Yes that helps. I'm with you on the texture and it contrasts well with the sharpness of the coat rack. I agree on the screw holes. Sometimes I get carried away with removing "distractions" and end up changing the story

Another intriguing image. I like your cropping and the B&W transformation. It makes me concentrate on the rack and think about the shadows (ghosts?). I wouldn't change anything in the composition. I think it's better to keep the screw holes and the cracking on the wall.   Posted: 11/09/2024 23:48:44

Than you, Jose! I feel, too, that the cracks and holes belong to the story. - I am so glad that the the image mediates something of the eerie atmosphere of the place.   Posted: 11/10/2024 08:27:47

Wow! I love deserted and dusty old buildings. I'm sure you must have come back with many wonderful images.
I love the simplicity of this image which works well in b&w. Definitely keep the screw holes as it adds to the texture of the walls.   Posted: 11/10/2024 18:18:15
