Puffin Flight to Gather Food by Randall Gusdorf

September 2023 - Puffin Flight to Gather Food

About the Image(s)

Taken in Iceland with a Fujifilm XH-2, with the 50-140 zoom lens at f4.5, 1/2500s, iso 1250 and at 129mm, crop sensor.
I then used Lightroom, and I am not sure but it looks like I used Topaz DeNoise.

Randall, Puffins are one of the most interesting birds to photograph. Image is sharp and the background is nicely blurred and non distracting. I think there is too much empty space than can be helped with a crop which makes the puffin stand out.   Posted: 09/10/2023 09:32:01

Ah, I agree. In the past I cropped in tight, and lost context, and I have been working on getting more background. Here you are correct, as the background is still there but the distracting elements are eliminated. I go with your suggestion and rendering but I might still add ever so slightly more on the left side. Thank you.   Posted: 09/10/2023 09:39:33

Randall, there is not perfect rule. It is a matter of taste !!   Posted: 09/10/2023 10:02:14

Randall, the detail of your puffin is outstanding with the blurred background. Respecting your comment to Isaac, I came up with this. I found there was no separation between the puffin's wing and the rock behind it, so I cloned more bright green to replace the rock. Let me know if this helped. Jim   Posted: 09/10/2023 12:26:53

Jim, it is outstanding. The only problem will be if I ever choose to enter it into competition, as cloning is not allowed in nature, but you give me idea to lighten up the darker areas which is allowed. It will not be as good as cloning, but it will look better. Thank you.   Posted: 09/10/2023 20:29:35

Morning Randall, I tried a vertical crop to bring the beautiful puffin closer. It is a fantastic image.   Posted: 09/17/2023 07:33:12

Very beautiful shot! Puffins are on my list of birds to photograph. I like Isaac's crop and what Jim did with the rocks by the wing.   Posted: 09/20/2023 09:17:00
