About the Image(s)
I took this picture from a small boat while visiting Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth off the east Coast of Scotland.
The island is home to the world’s largest colony of Northern Gannets. In breeding season, when I went,
over 150,000 of them can be present. They nest in large colonies and seems every available ledge on
The rock is used. From afar the rock looks white because of the incredible number of of birds and the guano accumulation.
Approaching the rock is quite dramatic and I have struggled with that image to present.
In the end I went for a detail of these 2 Gannets sharing a “private” moment amongst the thousands of birds.
It was the most challenging as I took it from the moving boat. I attach 2 background images of the rock covered by birds,
and the space around the gannets as perspective.

In Lightroom I cropped to focus on these 2 gannets and adjusted exposure.
