About the Image(s)
I took this shot of a Northern Gannet when it was flying above my head.
I was in a small cruise ship off the Faraoe Islands after a major storm in May.
I went out in the deck just when the sky had opened up and light shined through the wings
of the Gannet. First time I was using the 100-500 lens handheld and trying to
find settings to freeze the bird in flight while 12 feet swells were rocking the ship.
Shot with Canon R5 handheld.
300mm (RF 100-500 F 4.5-7.1 L IS USM)
TV setting, 1/3200 at f/5.6 and ISO 500
I used Lightroom to crop and adjust exposure.

The light shinning thru the wings is nice and catching one of its eyes while in flight helps the image. I wonder where they tuck their feet away.   Posted: 07/03/2025 18:06:25
"where they tuck their feet away", interesting point !!   Posted: 07/03/2025 18:27:05
Thank you, I am glad I finally figured out the settings for birds in flight.   Posted: 07/08/2025 22:19:38
You did so well under the described circumstances Gloria. Exposure and focus is great against the bright blue sky. Your shutter speed ensured a sharp image. Well done indeed. The legs are folded back under the tail .   Posted: 07/06/2025 09:12:58

Gloria, good capture of the BIF. Sharp. nice colors and the mild back light enhances the birds shape. I am going that way next month.   Posted: 07/08/2025 23:18:15
Thank you and enjoy!!! It is a special place   Posted: 07/20/2025 21:32:25
I like the details on the bird and the light shining through the wings makes it special. The circumstances under which you took this image makes it exceptional. Well done!   Posted: 07/14/2025 14:51:03

Nice capture, Gloria! Well-cropped and tack-sharp to highlight feather details. We can even see the pupil in this Gannet's eye, as well as the impressions where its legs fold into the sides of its lower abdomen on its streamlined body. I can only imagine how hard it must be to locate and lock in a flying bird from a moving deck with the R5/RF100-500 (I have the same setup but only used on land so far).   Posted: 07/22/2025 21:31:28
Perfectly composed. Perfect tones (light, dark, mid-tones). Interesting action.
Any chance you cloned out the feet?   Posted: 07/29/2025 03:18:28
