Colorful Trogon by Gloria Grandolini

April 2025 - Colorful Trogon

About the Image(s)

This male Elegant Trogon this year lived in the trees of my property in the pacific coast of Mexico.
I knew it was male because of the characteristic colors. It is a very vocal bird.
I was looking for it as it is from the same family of the Quetzal but has a much smaller tail.
I kept hearing the characteristic croaking “co-ah co-ah co-ah” but could not manage to take a photo For many days because he was constantly moving or hiding in the middle of many branches.
This is the best I could do. Hopefully it does give an idea of the elegance and colors.

Shot with Canon R5 handheld.
200 m (RF 70-200 f 2.8 L IS USM)
1/250 at f/5. ISO 800

I used Lightroom to crop closer, adjust exposure and dehaze

Gloria, beautiful bird, unfortunately it is overpowered by the intricate vegetation and also is looking away from you. In this circumstances I usually use burst to capture as many images as he bird allows me before it fly's away, so you can at least capture an image where the bird is looking to the camera. It is a variety that we do not see here in South Florida. I have seen them in Costa Rica and Colombia, but are somehow different.   Posted: 04/03/2025 00:40:07
