Male Rose-breasted Grosbeak by Grace Cohen

March 2025 - Male Rose-breasted Grosbeak

About the Image(s)

I just returned from photographing the warbler migration on the shore of Lake Erie early last May and decided to see if we had any migrating birds in a local wetland area not far from my house. I was rewarded with one quick shot of this male Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheuticus ludovicianus) before he flew further into the swamp. These lovely birds used to be fairly common here in my part of New Hampshire, but sadly not anymore, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to capture this image.

Cropped to make the bird stand out amongst the new spring-green leaves, and run through Topaz AI Noise.
Canon EOS 60D with EF 70-200 + Canon 2x III extender; 1/2500 f / 5.6

I like the diagonal line leading to the bird. Nice catch light in the eye. Birds don't usually sit very long, you were fortunate to catch this guy. Maybe a little tighter crop to eliminate the bright leaves on the left and focus more on the bird. What do you think?   Posted: 03/10/2025 19:19:05

I see this as a good image of a bird on a perch.
Watch out for the white plumage and over exposure of it. It is slightly soft around the beak and head and suggest an aperture of f8 to ensure overall sharpness.   Posted: 03/19/2025 11:29:13

Very interesting bird with the red patch - I had never seen it. I agree on cropping the image a bit. I also think it is still a bit soft even after Topaz, particularly on the white feathers. Maybe you can denoise it a bit more.   Posted: 03/19/2025 23:40:53

Grace, beautiful bird indeed with brilliant colors. We do not see them here in south Florida. The white plumage is slightly soft. Could be because the 2x extender. I agree with an even tighter crop and a touch of flip.   Posted: 03/27/2025 18:17:33
