Bird With an Attitude by Jerry Baumann

March 2025 - Bird With an Attitude

About the Image(s)

Shooting detail: Nikon Z50 with Nikon 24-200mm lens at max telephoto. ISO-1600, 1/320 sec., f-8.

Bird was photographed on Baranof Island, sporting a bad hairdo and a scowl. I think I disturbed its bath.

Jerry, I agree with you. This bald eagle has a very strong attitude. The partial amputation of the body degrades the image. A tighter crop done intentionally will improve the image.   Posted: 03/09/2025 11:19:38

Isaac, I agree. I like your crop much better. I need to experiment more with cropping.   Posted: 03/09/2025 11:23:25

Jerry, in my opinion, I cropped the best part of your Eagle. His face is absolutely powerful. It represents a strong dominant bird that we think of when we see an eagle. The face is absolutely amazing, is powerful, commands respect, and stands proud.   Posted: 03/10/2025 19:06:00

Amputations are always detracting from the impact of an image . The best crop is as suggested .   Posted: 03/19/2025 11:20:46

Jetty, great photo. To me the facial expression is the highlight of the photo. So I do agree that some cropping to focus more on the part of the image would enhance it.   Posted: 03/19/2025 23:37:16

Hi Jerry - I would have been nervous to have this massive powerhouse glaring at me that way - even at 200mm, but you held fast and got this nice, sharp shot. I agree with all that cropping will make your capture more dramatic, and suggest that you play with cropping options to see which you find most impactful. If you are not entering in a PSA Nature competition, you might consider removing the white spots (water drops).   Posted: 03/24/2025 22:50:46
