Nesting Cormorant by Kathy Buckard

January 2025 - Nesting Cormorant

About the Image(s)

This image was taken in Venice Rookery. The rookery has a small island where may birds nest but also you can walk around the entire pond and birds are nesting all around. To take pictures on the island you need a mid length telephoto lens. The area has an amazing amount of birds. Stay alert as birds are coming at you from all directions.

Nicely captured Kathy and you were lucky to include the young ones as well to add to your story. You were there at the right time.   Posted: 01/08/2025 22:13:35

I was very lucky to catch this image as it was the first time at this park. Usually only see cormorants diving for fish.   Posted: 01/13/2025 17:45:06

Kathy, these chicks are probably only a couple of days old. Interesting will be to capture images when they are being fed. Cormorant's most of the time build the nests on top of bushes. Here seems to be in a large tree branch.   Posted: 01/11/2025 15:49:28

I'm guessing the branch really helped to support the nest over the water and gave the cormorant easy assess to the water. Unfortunately, we were only in the area for one day, so the opportunity didn't come up for feeding time.   Posted: 01/13/2025 17:47:34

Kathy - this is such a nice capture of this Cormorant and her very young chicks. Nice crop. The angle of her head gave you the opportunity to get a nice sharp turquoise eye, too!   Posted: 01/20/2025 02:09:09

Kathy, great angle - shows the chicks, so new that their eyes haven't opened yet. Is that white stuff snow or frost on the nest and chicks.   Posted: 01/21/2025 00:43:07
