Great Horned Owl by Jerry Baumann

December 2024 - Great Horned Owl

About the Image(s)

This great horned owl was photographed in late afternoon in the northwest part of Yellowstone NP. It was scanning the edge of a meadow for any unlikely rodent or other small animal for dinner.

Photographed with a Canon 90D, 1/400 sec, f5.6, ISO 1600, with a Canon 100-400 L II lens at 400mm.

Jerry, it is a good image of a Great Horned Owl. It is sharp. There is too much empty space and tree branches that are overpowering the owl. This is my take of a good crop to make the owl stand out.   Posted: 12/04/2024 00:42:03

Isaac, glad you cropped it. I like the shot better when cropped tight. Had trouble judging how much more was needed for context.   Posted: 12/04/2024 02:11:36

I agree that Isaac crop makes the owl stand out. Also has a leading line of the branch to the main subject of the owl. Surrounding area and blurred background compliments the subject.   Posted: 12/05/2024 14:48:27

Jerry, A really nice image of Great Horned Owl, very sharp showing great details on the feathers. I like Isaac's crop as well. On my list to photograph this bird. I hear them in the night but have not been fortunate to see one yet.   Posted: 12/11/2024 18:13:57

Jerry you were so lucky to get such a clear shot of the owl and you did a great job with the sharpness. I really like the facial expression. I agree with the closer cropping.   Posted: 12/17/2024 22:02:01
