Big Catch ! by Kathy Buckard

December 2024 - Big Catch !

About the Image(s)

While on vacation visiting family last March, we went to Venice Rookery. We were amazing at all the activity in this rookery. It is relatively small, but a large variety of birds nest here.

Kathy, peak of action image. The anhingas are magnificent fishers, and the best is to watch them tossing the fish in the air and then swallow it. Unfortunately, the image is soft in spite of the 1/8000 shutter speed, so it must be a very large crop, or that the camera took focus away from the bird/fish eyes. I did crop it additionally since there is too much empty space, and the reflection is not clear so it does not add.   Posted: 12/04/2024 00:38:35

I agree there was too much space around. I was afraid to go closer because I saw that the image was soft. It was a large crop but I liked the action and wanted to share. Sometimes, we are just not fast enough to catch the action and make sure all the modes are correct!   Posted: 12/04/2024 00:56:19

Kathy, Great image at its peak action. Did you try passing the image through a sharpening tool? I tried to load your image in photoshop to sharpen it but it might work better with an original file.   Posted: 12/11/2024 19:16:45

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately, it was a very large crop and cannot be sharpen further but I liked the action of the shot.   Posted: 12/17/2024 14:28:19

Great action indeed but I have to agree with Isaac's comments on the sharpness of the image . Nice picture and in South Africa we call the bird a "Darter"- wonder if it is the same ?   Posted: 12/13/2024 00:57:07

Hi Kathy, the image and the action are great. I love seeing the 2 sets of eyes of the bird and the fish - scared and happy.. ! I agree with others that the lack of sharpness makes it hard to go for a tighter crop.   Posted: 12/17/2024 22:10:10
