This image was taken with my Sony RX10iv while driving along Lake Michigan at about 30 mph. The camera was at its widest zoom (24mm) at 1/3200 of a second, I was attracted by the red chairs on the dock and the lovely tree on a very healthy lawn. I took several as we progressed, but selected this one because I liked the placement of the dock, just peeking out behind the tree, creating one subject. In post, I cropped and straightened the image, reduced the highlights on the sky, increased the exposure in the most shaded areas.

Hi Ingrid - A very modern artsy twist to a standard landscape image you're working on this month. I love everything about the sky and the lovely balance of color with the red chairs drawing me into the frame. As attractive as it is, there is nothing of interest in the tree to keep my interest, other than as a bother as it is blocking my view of the dock leading me to those beckoning chairs and the rest of the landscape. The composition doesn't work for me personally. If the tree was a bit more to the left, it would make a lovely frame for that splendid lake-view though. Posted: 08/11/2026 22:11:50
Hi Ingrid,
I can see why you were drawn to the red chairs at the end of the dock. For me, the wharf emerging from behind the tree is actually a strong anchor point in this image as well. The segmented layers, land, water, and sky are well balanced, and the tree trunk provides a strong initial draw for the viewer. The sky is handled beautifully too. The branches and leaves, at image top, hold the viewer in the image and I think these are essential in balancing the image .
I'm with Darcy on the tree placement. Shifting the tree further left in the frame might create a stronger composition, hopefully you have more image available on the right to balance things out.

That dock is so inviting! I'm always amazed at what you can capture from your car window!
I do wish you had snapped this one a moment sooner. I would love to see some separation between the tree and the dock. That would have really made for a great image.

Hi Ingrid,
My first reaction before reading your explanation was that I didn't think the composition worked for me. Like previously stated, I thought the tree moved to the left with some separation with the dock would have been stronger. After looking at this image for awhile, rules are sometime to be broken. This composition has grown on me and add to your drive by shooting collection.
