Had an awesome day shooting motorsport, opportunity provided by our Nikon School. Nikon School run various events, typically they are popular and you are lucky to get enrolled in time, this one I was lucky enough. Through the school, 6 of us had special access to area not available to the general public, (following a full safety briefing) guided by a well??‘known automotive photographer who shared heaps of tips. I also borrowed a Nikon Z6 III for the day, which made tracking the cars a bit easier with the lighter camera.
Shot way too many frames (as you do), but ended up with a handful I’m really happy with. The twilight session was the standout, this image from that time, soft light, track lamps on, and the cars just looked good. I spent a lot of time practising panning, even successfully pushing down to around 1/40s earlier on. The shot I’m sharing was a cleaner, easier pan at F6.3, ISO 100, 1/440s with just a light edit.
Had a fun day, learned a lot, and definitely keen to shoot more motorsport.

Hi Tom. That does sound like a unique opportunity. I can certainly understand why you liked the twilight session. The lighting really makes this image effective and your composition with the implied S curve of the track really sets a nice stage for the primary race car. Your placement of the primary car in the frame is perfect to show it off and engage the viewer. The driver and/or owner of that car should definitely want a copy of this image! Hi Tom - What a striking image! I love the twilight lighting - it creates an atmosphere that is dramatic and quite beautiful. The composition is equally effective. There is nothing in this image that isn't working at keeping the viewer's eye right where it is suppose to be. I have a sense of being at the race track. Even the white barriers in another image might be a distraction - not here. I especially like that the prominent car is followed at a distance by another which tells a story and adds interest. What a terrific opportunity and you certainly made the most of it. This is a stunning image - tack sharp on the start of your show, with the supporting player adequately blurred to create a sense of motion. Everything is well done!
