Honoring Fallen Brothers by Karen Davis

November 2025 - Honoring Fallen Brothers

About the Image(s)

Camera: Canon EOS R5
Lens: EF 24-105mm
Exposure: 1/1250 @ f11
Processing: Minimal. Just a bit of Clarity, opened the Shadows, and cropped a bit.

I was honored to return to Washington, D.C. with our local Honor Flight team to take 70+ military veterans to see their memorials. I know you're not supposed to have favorites, but how could you not love this guy? He's 100 years old and served in World War II. He reminds me so much of my "Bonus Dad" who also served and just turned 99. Andre fought at the
Battle of the Bulge and asked me to help him find the portion of the WWII Memorial dedicated to his fallen brothers. This was a touching moment as he removed his cap, said a silent prayer, and gently laid his white rose on the memorial.

Hi Karen - How young he was to live through such a deadly experience! I can't even imagine what he must have felt as he laid that rose at the memorial. What a touching moment. I appreciate your support of your local veterans and your contribution to making moments like this happen. Well captured!   Posted: 11/12/2025 01:11:02

Hi Darcy,
You know, I hadn't really thought about his age at the time, so I had to look up the exact dates for the Battle of the Bulge - December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. And wow - he was just 18! We can't possibly fathom what those "kids" endured.
Thanks for your comments.

P.S. I forgot to add that I did remove some distant people from the background to help draw attention to this special man having his moment.   Posted: 11/14/2025 19:39:18

Hi Karen. This is a wonderful image, and you have done a great job of capturing the moment and its emotion. The flower is a special touch. Hard to believe that 18 year olds participated in the Battle of the Bulge - this gentleman deserves tremendous respect. I think your decision to remove extra people in the background was definitely the right decision. My only suggestion would be to consider adding a slight vignette to draw the viewer's attention to the main subjects, although I understand PSA frowns on that.   Posted: 11/15/2025 22:49:42

Hi Karen.

Very well captured image also respectfully captured as well. Nothing I can add to the image it stands for a moment in time; it is a moment in time that reflects on a horrendous period in our history while also remembering all the participants and the suffering together with the losses.
