Majestic Marblehead by Karen Davis

July 2025 - Majestic Marblehead

About the Image(s)

Camera: Canon EOS R5
Lens: EF 24-105 mm
Shutter Speed: 1/800 Sec
Aperture: f 8.0

I took this "postcard shot" in 2024 during our camping trip to Sandusky, Ohio. We took a drive around Lake Erie in search of lighthouses and found this beauty in Marblehead Lighthouse State Park. It took several shots and a lot of patience to get the right angle with no tourists in the picture. I processed it just slightly in Lightroom - reduced Whites & Shadows, and increased Vibrance. Then I added the Frame and Stroke in Photoshop.

From the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website:

The Marblehead Lighthouse is one of Lake Erie's best known and most-photographed landmarks. It is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse during the summer season for spectacular views of the lake and its islands in the distance. History buffs will enjoy stopping by the replica lifesaving station with museum of US Coast Guard activities and visiting the gift shop.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Karen Portrait mode works well with the foreground rocks, inviting the viewer into the image. Composition, including the environment, makes for a stronger image and tells the story. Luminance on the tower is well handled with no blown-out areas, not always easy on an illuminated curved surface. well captured   Posted: 07/11/2025 01:11:21

Hi Karen - Your description as a 'postcard image' is on the mark. The composition and technical aspects are well done. The environment creates a frame that enhances this unique lighthouse. I have no suggestions. Well done!   Posted: 07/17/2025 04:26:12

Hi Karen. This is a wonderful lighthouse image, from the perfect exposure, to the framing by the trees, the interesting but noy competing sky, the leading line of the rock wall, and the lovely red details at the top of the lighthouse. I would not change a thing!   Posted: 07/19/2025 22:35:58

Hi Karen - Great capture and you had a wonderful sky that day! I agree with the other comments that it is a well captured shot and you handled the bright white well   Posted: 07/21/2025 14:50:45

Hi Erin,
Thanks for your comments. It's interesting that several of you mentioned the "bright white." It had just been painted and it really was "bright white!"
However, when I submitted it for our local camera club critique, the one thing he mentioned was that I should tone down the white a bit.
I like my PSA Group's opinions better - LOL!!
Thanks!
