Reeds and Vase by Tom Brassil

May 2025 - Reeds and Vase

About the Image(s)

For this month our camera club set subject was "Staged Image". While that does cover a multitude of areas, still life, portraiture, pets, etcetera, I decided to present this image.

A very simple vase and reed combination using about five lights to illuminate the set up against a simple black background. While this image didn't turn out exactly as I had in mind, it did score reasonably well with the judges. The image I am after and will try again at a later date is for the effect of the reeds in motion flowing up and then the reeds in a stationary position, similar to a back curtain flash affect. Tried a number of different ways all very unsuccessful, perhaps an idea will come later on that will work. Thanks for viewing.

Our club allows two images to be entered each month; we have a set subject and an open subject together with two grades A and B grade. We have three award levels Acceptance, Credit and Merit .

Hi Tom. This is a dramatic minimalist image and the lighting you arranged is very effective. I love the purple hue and the reflection of that color in the reeds. Your focus is perfect and the composition is effective and holds the viewers' attention even in its simplicity. Although you can see the border of the image if you look carefully, I'd love to see it with a tiny stroke to set the composition off against the background. I'm not sure I understand your description of what you were aiming for, but I hope you will share it with us when you get what you were trying to achieve.   Posted: 05/11/2025 20:58:02
