About the Image(s)

As we are coming up on Spring, I was going through older flower photos to look and see what I need to keep working on. This one I didn't like the focus overall, but there was enough detail in the photo to crop it down. Added some saturation to the orange and lowered the highlights. Shot using an 85mm macro lens.

Hi Erin,
I agree with your assessment regarding the overall focus. I am not sure you are handheld or on a tripod. If you are on a tripod you may want to try some focus stacking. Tom does a really good job with multiple images. I would suggest you start with 2 and blend them in photoshop. I also think that the orange against the green background works well in the original image.
Best regards,

Hi Erin I do like the way you have isolated the centre of the flower to draw the attention to that point. I also remember the trouble I had working out the depth of field when using an 85 mm macro lens, I agree with Greg that in future use perhaps a tripod and if you going to be that wide with your focus perhaps using focus blending. However with the image you have now might I suggest embracing the blur and blur the petals progressively from the center to the outer section of the image, further drawing the attention into the centre of the flower   Posted: 03/11/2025 20:39:52

Hi Erin. I think your crop is very effective to bring attention to the best focus in the middle of the flower. I also think your decision to make the flower's center in the lower middle of the frame was a great idea. I also like the contrast between the orange of the flower and the green of the background. My only suggestion would be to clone or healing brush out the darker spots in the lower right of the image.   Posted: 03/16/2025 16:03:12

Hi Erin - Your tight composition choice works well, and the lack of focus was used to advantage. I also think that including touches of the green background between those petals added some nice contrast. The markings on the flower are helpful in bringing the viewer to center. Nice job!   Posted: 03/16/2025 19:39:18

This image certainly brightened my day!
I love your composition; placing the center of the flower more toward the bottom - that (and the beautiful color!) tends to create an upward, optimistic feel to your photo.
I agree with the suggestions to try some focus stacking. We recently had a presentation on Floral Photography and he was able to achieve some amazing images! Hi Erin,
Greetings my friend.
A lovely image of the flower you have shared this edition. The crop is tight, but I think its okay as the details and framing works well with the image. The image also goes with the caption as you described. Nice concept and thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
