Tassie Island by Tom Brassil

March 2025 - Tassie Island

About the Image(s)

This month’s image is from southern Australia (Tasmania). The area is inaccessible except by a multiday walk or light aircraft doing a beach landing (yes, I took the aircraft). We had access to a boat used by a research facility in the area. While travelling, I spotted this little island and was intrigued by the colour and foliage. It is an image from my archive, and I have had a number of attempts to process it to my liking never being happy with the results. This the most recent. I still am not sure I am doing it justice. Any comments and suggestions appreciated.

Image taken from rocking boat F9.6 iso 560 at 1/500 second with 70 mm lens, and a lot of Photoshop work.

Hi Tom,
Your image has a nice dark and cinematic feel to it. Your processing gives me the feeling of this island popping up in the middle of nowhere. I also like how the colors work together to create that dark mood.
Best regards,

Hi Tom. I love the drama you have created around this tiny "island". the colors of the water and the sky are gorgeous and really add to the atmosphere. I especially like the glow behind the little tree which makes it the star of the show. I think you should be happy with your results on this one!   Posted: 03/16/2025 15:57:46

Hi Tom - WOW! What impact you've created with this image. I believe that this attempt at post-processing is a winner. The island is striking with the band of white rock providing strong contrast to the deep water and vegetation on this itty-bitty isle. A beautiful capture of an artsy landscape. Good eye and technically well done!   Posted: 03/16/2025 18:39:46

HI Tom -
I concur that it has a cinematic or spooky look to it. It makes me feel as though a storm is about to come in. The waves and the way the trees are growing also gives the appearance that its very windy which adds to the feel.   Posted: 03/18/2025 16:45:07

Thank you, Erin, very glad you felt the impending storm from the image.   Posted: 03/22/2025 06:06:33

Your "a lot of Photoshop work" comment made me smile. Don't tell anyone else so as not to dispel the cinematic (yep, Erin, I stole your comment!) effect you achieved!
I love the colors, but would like a little more space on the left if you have it. There seems to be a small rock in the water that would make a nice leading line into the upward sweep of the rock. But, from a rocking boat, you might not have grabbed those extra pixels. AI??
Also, there might be a tiny bit of haloing across the top and on the right side of the rocks.
Wonderful capture and post-processing!

Hi Karen, I do agree that a bit more leading element on the left might add to the image, thanks for that input. Halo needs to go as well.   Posted: 03/22/2025 06:10:27

Hi Tom,
Greetings my friend.
A surreal image of a lonely island in the middle of no where. The post processing, the light and the color pallate seems pretty mysterious to me. A great work and thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
Kamal.
