Lair of the Bear by Ingrid Lockhart

February 2025 - Lair of the Bear

About the Image(s)

This image was taken with my RX10iv on a recent outing with a group of photography friends. It is located at a park about 15 minutes from our home. I was drawn to this scene because of the subtle colors of winter along this partially frozen stream. It was shot at 1/3200 of a second, ISO 160, F2.4. I have another version where I've added a squirrel on the rock in the front but decided to submit the basic scene for your suggestions and comments.

Hi Ingrid,
A very nice wintry scene. I like the color palette and the layering of the scene. The rock anchors the foreground, and the stream leads the eye into the background. I just have one question, "why F2.4"? All in all a very nice image.   Posted: 02/08/2025 17:45:16

Hi Greg. The reason for the aperature is the fact that I shoot at high speeds to counter some of my physical limitations. Not sure why, but the wide open aperature still resulted in adequate focus in the distance...   Posted: 02/08/2025 18:58:21

Hi Ingrid,
Thanks for your reply. If you are using a wide-angle lens you will still get good depth of field when it is wide open.
Best regards,

Hi Ingrid, a lovely area to have so close to your home. Nice to have the rock anchoring the foreground then the river leading the viewer to the distant hill range. The subtle hue variations of the foliage contrasting with the river add interest to the image. I think the image might be improved if there was another location without as much foreground foliage, if there was such an area. Well seen and captured, thanks for sharing.   Posted: 02/09/2025 23:50:20

Have to agree with Tom. Too many foreground willows. Composition good, but the blown out sky patches are a little distracting.   Posted: 02/11/2025 21:24:41

Hi Ingrid -
A lovely stream I'm sure in all weather. I echo that the rock in the foreground works well. I also like that there is some of the blue sky below the clouds to help separate the river from the sky.
I do wonder if you should crop in more from the left to get rid of some of the foreground willows and the less enjoyable section of the non-iced river.   Posted: 02/13/2025 01:52:15

Hi Ingrid,
My first thought was "Where is the Bear?" Our camera club just had an Evaluator who emphasized the importance of the title setting up your image - telling the viewer what you want them to see. Just something to consider...

I do like the anchoring rock and the meandering, icy river. I have a tough time looking through the "fence" created by the willows in the foreground.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ingrid - I really have nothing to contribute beyond what's already been discussed. Congratulations - You and your friends must have caught a good day to be out and about with your camera . . . Colorado has been extraordinarily cold as of late. Best ~   Posted: 02/21/2025 04:45:37
