Cinque Terre Landscape by Darcy Johnson

January 2025 - Cinque Terre Landscape

About the Image(s)

This image of the village of Manarola was captured in the Spring of 2024 on a visit to Italy. Manarola is one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre and second smallest with a population of 353. It may also be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo dating from 1338. Rising 36 meters, the bell tower of the Church of San Lorenzo shown here was rebuilt in 1375 after a collapse. The region is known for its fishing, wine and lemons.

I cropped the image slightly to a 5x7, with basic processing in Lightroom that included the addition of a slight vignette.

Hi Darcy, very interesting image and I do like your choice of crop, which gives dominance to the central subject, the church tower. The separation of the buildings to the vegetation in the background and foreground, again adds to the prominence of the central elements.

As a suggestion, try and increase the saturation and brightness, marginally, of the clocktower and/or reduce the other buildings to try and bring the clocktower out more. It does have prominence as it is, this adjustment may add a bit more strength to the tower, just to experiment. Lovely image well captured and handled   Posted: 01/11/2025 02:39:26

Hi Tom - Thanks for the suggestions. I'll play with it a bit more in post and see what works.   Posted: 01/20/2025 05:36:43

Hi Darcy. What a great trip you must have had! You did a great job of capturing the architecture of this town and the terraced hills around it. I think your crop is perfect. Although the white building in the upper left draws the viewer's attention, I think it adds context and definitely helps the story. Hard to believe that the population is only 353. I bet that's a tight knit community where everyone knows everyone else's business. Although the church tower has a prominent position in the exact middle, I think the surrounding colorful and interesting residences tell the real story of the town and I love them just as they are. Now I want to go there!   Posted: 01/15/2025 21:21:43

Hi Ingrid - It was a wonderful trip. Having been there it is hard to believe that the population is that small as well. While well worth visiting, it's definitely not a 'hidden' gem given all the tourists that shared our trip to the region (and we went in the shoulder season). To add a bit of perspective, this shot was taken on a hiking trail across a large ravine the town is built around. My back to was to the Ligurian Sea. The views were gorgeous no matter which way you looked.   Posted: 01/20/2025 06:07:58

Hi Darcy,
What a lovely image. I can see myself having a coffee looking at the vista. I like Tom's suggestion.
