Flying Fox Skimming by Tom Brassil

January 2025 - Flying Fox Skimming

About the Image(s)

Wishing you all the best for this new year and success in whatever endeavors you participate in.

With our recent spell of very hot weather, I visited a river with some photographic friends to attempt to capture Flying Foxes drinking. In extremely hot conditions typically above 38C (100F) these flying Fox (also known as Fruit Bats) skim the water surface drinking from the water their splashes make, you also need to be aware of wind direction to ensure you get face on shots. Obviously, you need to be well hydrated and sun protected before you try the shots, but they can make for some interesting shots.

Shooting at rapid fire on F8, 1/4000 sec, ISO 2000.

With this shot I was taken by the almost symmetrical aspect with both wing tips dragging the same length of water.

Thanks for viewing.

Tom, A very nice sharp image of the flying sharp.
my only suggestion wouldbe crop crop some of the water at the botton, which would bring up your attention of the fox.   Posted: 01/05/2025 21:27:28

Thank you Stuart for taking the time to visit this group and also for your suggestion, which I believe has merit.

Hi Tom - Beautiful Flying Fox portrait and what a great vantage point! You did a lovely job of capturing the wing tips creating the splash, those eyes, and textures. I like the reflections of the bat as well as those in the background too - adds some depth. I agree though that the light reflections in the foreground don't do anything to enhance the image. Technically well done. You were certainly rewarded for venturing out in such heat!   Posted: 01/07/2025 19:38:47

Thank you Darcy, yep a crop of the foreground is definitely needed, I'm surprised I didn't notice before I posted. Thanks you   Posted: 01/11/2025 02:43:45

My first reaction was "WHOA!" What a wonderful capture of this interesting creature. Your focus is amazing and the the splashes of his wings in the water are wonderful. I agree with cropping out the lighter water in the foreground, and would probably take out some of the water on the left as well, both as a composition technique, but also to eliminate the floating light colored object, which draws attention away for the main event. Thanks for sharing this!   Posted: 01/15/2025 21:36:09

Tom, you caught this flying fox at the peak of action. It has great visual impact and interest especially with the wings touching the water. I have never seen one but it bears a close resemblance to a bat. Do like Stuarts crop. Very sharp and well done.   Posted: 01/18/2025 23:44:02

Hi Tom,
Awesome!!!! You captured the moment. I am not in the cropping camp. Your presentation has a clear subject at a decisive moment, and I am not really distracted by other minor elements.
Best regards,
